Each year, LCF runs a competition open to Year 9 art and design students from all over the country. With the 2012 Olympics causing a buzz across the UK, this year’s competition had a sportswear theme. Our Fashion in Motion competition asked students to design clothing to be worn by either a competing athlete for the 2012 Olympics or a sports fan. The students were asked to demonstrate their own fashion style through their design. We received around 50 entries from schools all over the country. Entries were judged by Claudine Rousseau, Course Leader, BA (Hons) Fashion Sportswear.

30 lucky Year 9 students from five Hackney schools (Cardinal Pole RC, Hackney Free, Mossbourne Community Academy, Stoke Newington and Our Lady’s) attended a week-long summer school at LCF’s Mare Street site from 6 to 10 July. The course explored fashion design and business. The students worked in 6 teams and competed to come up with the best Olympic 2012 inspired fashion t-shirt and products. They took part in mini-lectures, got to grips with research, marketing and promotion and even made their own mini-t-shirts. On the final day they presented their ideas and designs to a panel of judges.

For her eight-minute performance at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Closing Ceremony on Sunday, singer Leona Lewis wore a voluminous gold dress designed by three London College of Fashion students (Venus Chen, Pavelina Wilemanova and Denisa Senegerova from the BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Womenswear) under the direction of Costume Design Director Jon Bentley.
A team of six LCF students, including one from BA (Hons) Fashion Promotion, two from BA (Hons) Costume for Performance, as well as the three designers, flew to Beijing to take part in the preparations for London’s handover ceremony. Costume designer Lorna Thomas designed and made the central costume for the Paralympic ceremony.
