Salimah Haji
My name is Salimah and I am doing a Diploma in Hair and Make-Up Styling. It is a one year course specializing in fashion make up for editorial and catwalk. I am enjoying the course a lot as it gives me a chance to do what I love and am passionate about as well as interact with students from all over the world.I particularly enjoy collaborating with students from the London College of Communication and I think it’s an advantage being a part of the University of the Arts as it gives us an opportunity to work with students studying fashion, photography, styling, design etc. across the colleges. When I finish the course in June 2008 I would like to gain some experience in the industry as a make up artist and hair stylist and therefore I am looking for as many opportunities as I can to build a strong portfolio.

This is from my first photo shoot. The assignment was titled Urban Cults and my chosen cult was New Romantics. The final image make up is inspired by Boy George and the hair is by a band called ‘Strawberry Switchblade’. This is a contemporary version of new romantics. The make up, hair and styling in all these images is by Salimah Haji.

This image is from my second assignment called Bricolage Retromania 2008. This image is inspired by the 18th century and the 1960s.

This image is from my collaboration with Davinia Young, a photographer from the Digital Lens-based Image Making course at the London College of Communication.

These images are from another collaboration with Davinia Young and Natasha Vassiliou from the Diploma in Digital Lens-based Image Making. These looks were inspired by the Christina Aguilera video for the song ‘Fighter’.

I worked on Alternative Fashion Week and did the make up for Fannie Schiavoni’s collection. Fannie is a student at LCF – BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Womenswear. The collection is inspired by origami and the Art Deco era. The quiet silhouettes are combined with dramatic geometry, sharp edges and experimental shapes, but yet are sophisticated and wearable. The colour palette is black, grey and blue with distinctive accents.
Alternative fashion week was held at Spitalfields Market from April 21st till April 25th and featured the work of over 60 designers. The show had a lot of media coverage including on The Guardian and Sky News.
I did the make up for 3 models including Marianne Berglund of Make Me A Supermodel fame. Photography by Lee Gillies.
