LCF takes part in London Collections: Men

LCF is proud to announce LCFM, a brand new initiative showcasing new collections from emerging menswear designers, all of whom are LCF alumni with expanding businesses. LCFM, which sits alongside London Collections: Men, the first showcase of its kind in London to celebrate emerging and established menswear brands, presents Asger Juel Larsen, Matteo Molinari, Domingo Rodriguez and Oliver Ruuger showing their S/S 2013 collections to buyers and press for the first time. Through LCFM, LCF is setting the bar for supporting and nurturing British trained designers who represent the future of menswear. Professor Frances Corner OBE, Head of LCF said,

LCFM marks an exciting new phase for LCF. We know that our menswear alumni are amongst the best in the world, we also know the financial climate is making it even tougher for emerging designers to break into the fashion industry; which is why London Collections provides us with the perfect opportunity to present these inspiring young designers to the world stage and help propel them and their fledging businesses to even greater success.

We love individuality, we love image, we love uniqueness, we just want to see more of it in the fashion industry – we know things are changing but we’re not willing to wait – our students are the fashion industry of tomorrow. We say homogeneous fashion images are for the faint hearted. We will create events and editorials that are alive and reflect how much LCF loves fashion and loves the people that can make it happen. To do this we need YOU.

Magic Mirror launches on Oxford Street

A shopper using the technology

LCF students are encouraged to go and check out the new Virtual Fashion Mirrors which can be found on the 1st floor of John Lewis’s flagship London department store on Oxford Street. Designed to help shoppers determine which styles and colours work best for them in an efficient, yet experiential way, the mirrors superimpose clothing over the customer’s on-screen image.

The John Lewis StyleMe mirrors, developed by technology specialist Cisco, in-conjunction with C-instore, Aitech and The Team, each have built in cameras which capture a shoppers body dimensions and position.

Orchid Male Cancer Awareness Week

This week is ORCHID Male Cancer Awareness Week (23-29 April) and to kick off proceedings we’re really excited to share with you an exclusive behind the scenes film about the launch of this year’s winning T-Shirt designed by BA (Hons) Fashion Illustration student Sasha Helim, which is AVAILABLE now in HOUSE OF FRASER Stores across the UK.

Each year over 37,000 men will be diagnosed with a male-specific cancer; from sons to grandfathers all men face the risk of prostate, penile or testicular cancer. Here at LCF, for the second year in a row, we teamed up with ORCHID and Raging Bull to brief all three years from BA (Hons) Fashion Illustration to design an iconic T-Shirt which encourages the men in our lives to check themselves regularly and to help raise vital funds for ORCHID, who are the UK’s leading charity fighting against male cancer.

To get involved follow ORCHID through Twitter and help them reach 1,000 followers this week and make sure you get down to House of Fraser to grab your very own T-Shirt as modelled by a gorgeous line up of guys including model BB Kaye and TV presenter Matt Johnson.

Check back this week for more information on London College of Fashion’s collaboration, including the high profile fashion judging panel and celebrity shoot.

M&S launch Sustainable Fashion Lab

Work from the Centre for Sustainable Fashion and designers Michelle Lowe-Holder and Noel Stewart

Work from the Centre for Sustainable Fashion and designers Michelle Lowe-Holder and Noel Stewart

LCF’ s Centre for Sustainable Fashion have been working with Marks and Spencer (M&S) and Oxfam to create the UK’s first Sustainable Fashion Lab in the heart of East London, at the Old Truman Brewery.

The project involves LCF’s MA Fashion and the Environment students and brings together an exciting array of designers, stylists and thought-leaders who will be exploring and debating the future of a more sustainable fashion industry.

The project will give M&S customers a behind-the-scenes look into the world of 21st Century fashion and offer the opportunity to witness the stars of environmentally friendly fashion at work. Eco-conscious visitors will even be able to try their hand at designing and creating their own items through expert-led master classes.

Customers can take unwanted items of clothing to the lab and each item will be assessed for potential use and will either be reused and transformed in the lab or handed to Oxfam to resell or recycle.

The M&S Sustainable Fashion Lab, in partnership with Oxfam and LCF’s Centre for Sustainable Fashion at the Old Truman Brewery, London, is open between 10am – 5pm every day (except Mondays) from 26 April – 9 May 2012.

The events calender is packed full of workshops and talks from LCF’s Dilys Williams and Dr Kate Fletcher as well as menswear designer Christopher Raeburn. Read the full event listing here.

Fashion Illustration, Music and Art project

Work from BA (hons) Fashion Illustration student So Karee Luna

"I love it when they call me big papa" - Work from BA (hons) Fashion Illustration student So Karee Luna

Red Bull brought together student artists and musicians to develop the offices of Phrased Differently, a music publishing company in East London, into a creative den full of music inspired art. There was no intention to exhibit the work, but to leave it as a permanent part of the wall space to be discovered by any visitors to the studios.

The project proved that musicians and artists vibe off each other to inspire projects and work very closely together within a creative process.

Students merchandise uniform suppliers

LCF students' styling work at Dennys, Soho

Graduate Diploma in Fashion Media Styling students were recently given the brief to re-style Denny’s Uniforms. The hospitality uniform suppliers asked students to capture the brand’s tradition through fresh eyes to make Denny’s appeal to a young demographic. The students’ work was then used to merchandise the Soho store.

Course Director, Nilgin Yusuf explains:

Utilitarian dress, such as chef’s wear, have an integrity, a purposefulness and a distinct aesthetic – the design of the jacket is not just about style but also about form and function  which makes re-styling the  Denny’s Uniforms chefs jackets  a real  challenge for our students. The garments don’t change very often (in the same way that high street fashion does) but the garments do have to respond to innovations in  technology and  reflect changing customer needs and environments.
